Trefor Owen is a great believer in jazz guitar clubs – he has formed three over the past 50 years – the first was in 1974 when he had a music shop in Bangor, North Wales. In 2007 he formed the Cheadle Jazz Guitar Club and later the Mold Jazz Guitar Club which is now known as the North Wales Jazz Guitar Club under the leadership of Tim Price and John Iball.
The original aim of the jazz guitar clubs was to give Trefor’s students a stage to develop their skills by playing in front of a friendly and supportive audience, as multi-instrumental jam sessions can seem to be very unnerving places for jazz guitar students.
However, both clubs from time to time have featured many world class jazz guitarists and well-known British jazz guitarists.
In recent times on the eve of the Wrexham international Jazz Guitar Weekend the guest tutors have been featured at the Cheadle Jazz Guitar Club.
Over the past few years with less jazz gigs around, the jazz guitar clubs have become a place for jazz guitarists to play and try new tunes in a very relaxed environment.
Keeping the jazz guitar flame alive.
The clubs hope to further the interest in jazz guitar and welcome new members to play or listen. The Cheadle Jazz Guitar Club hosts a meal before its meetings, and the chat is all about jazz guitar history, players, strings, picks and set-ups.
The Cheadle Jazz Guitar Club usually meets on the second Thursday of the month at Bijou, 9, Massie Street, Cheadle Village, SK8 1BW – Music starts at 8pm. £5 cash on the door.
The North Wales Jazz Guitar Club meets at Padeswood & Buckley Golf Club, Station Lane, Mold, Flintshire, North Wales, CH7 4JD – Music starts at 8pm. Free admission.
